Near the Cottage

The woods and fields around the cottage are a haven for wildlife, with many varieties of birds and animals to be seen. The recent planting of over 100 acres of hardwood trees will increase the habitat for many more species.

Close by is the spectacular Irthing Gorge, a geological wonder that is one of only three of its type in England. The gorge and its ancient woodland is a S.S.S.I. (Site of Special Scientific Interest) because of its geology, flora and fauna. The beautiful Crammel Lynn waterfall and the historic Popping Stone, where Sir Walter Scott proposed to his future wife are well worth a visit.

The surronding area is steeped in local history, from the times of Roman occupation, to the Border Reiver skirmishes, and association with Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott.

• The river also has an excellent reputation with canoists when in flood, (bring your own canoe).

• Cycling on the farm, also Reiver and Hadrians Wall Trails.
• Water sports and fishing at Keilder Dam, approx 15 miles.
